Do your research because not all Pest Companies are the same. It is very easy to get qualifications in this industry. In fact it is scary just how easy it is. This means you the consumer needs to be aware of what you need to ask.

First of all ask for the Technician’s name and Pest License number. The lower the number the more experience they have. Also ask for a certificate of currency for their insurance, anyone can say they are insured but make them produce their certificate to prove it.

Always ask for the Safety Data Sheet for the products that will used on your property. This way you can research how safe the product is. Do some research online whether these products are banned overseas. Australia can be very slow in ridding itself of chemicals that are considered to hazardous in other countries. Wikipedia is generally a good source to research.

A professional company should provide you with all the information you need to make an informed decision as to using their service. Your family’s safety should be their priority, not just making a quick easy dollar.

The other thing that you need to consider is price. Cheap is not good in this industry it generally means cheaper and more toxic products rush jobs again meaning less concern about safety and more concern with getting the job done fast. John Ruskin once said the following.

It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money – that’s all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot – it can’t be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

An example for this would be if you wanted a termite inspection and a pest spray. You call 2 companies, Company A and Company B. Company A quotes you $330.00 and Company B quotes you $500.00. Most would say Company B is ripping you off but this could be far from the truth. Company A is likely to be using cheaper pesticides therefore putting profit before safety, Also the time they will spend on the job is likely to be about one and a half hours meaning their hourly rate is $220.00. Now Company B is using more expensive and safer chemicals and yes you will have to pay for that privilege, after all it is your family they are looking out for. Also the time they are likely to spend on the job is around three and a half hours thus making their hourly rate about $140.00. So if you used Company A you would pay them $220.00 an hour not to do the job properly or you could pay Company B $140.00 an hour to do the job properly.

This why you should always ask how long the job should take this will give you an idea of the quality of job. Because if you are having someone dealing with termites in your home you better make sure you are getting the best. The picture above is part of the $200,000 of termite damage a bad inspector missed because the client went for the cheapest price first. Our inspection which cost only $50.00 more exposed the extent of the damage.

So buyer beware and remember you get what you pay for. Nothing more and nothing less.

Warranties

When getting quotes for termite management you are likely to be offered some sort of Timber replacement warranty or insurance. This can be confusing and very misleading. Let’s deal with a product warranty first. This is where the manufacturer of a specific product warrants that their product will not fail. It does not cover you if the application is poor. The really bad news is that products do not fail it is almostalways the application. So you can enter into an agreement thinking if termites get in and do damage that it will be repaired. With the exception of one or two pre construction products there has never been a payout on a Product failure because they don’t fail.  The application or installation is at fault thus meaning a product warranty is useless.

Warranties that only cover you if Termites are found active in your home. There is one baiting system out there that only covers you for damage if the Termites are active not if you find damage only at a later date. Very convenient they are relying on the product killing the termites before new damage is located.

So is there a product out there that is the right one? Luckily yes. TimberSecure is an insurance policy that protects you against further Termite damage. It is a no fault policy meaning once the insurance is issued the company pays out. Please read the brochure attached below. We don’t offer product warranties preferring to offer a product we have faith in and can fully trust.
